Today, what’s the purpose of scripture, of a word from God? Billions of Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Hindus, among others, rely on the revealed word of God to guide their lives. From media portrayals of our world, it would be hard to pick this idea out. Popular culture wants to make religion irrelevant. Movies and TV shows mock God and mock believers, often portraying religious people as over-zealous, ignorant, bigoted, and naive. Or, there’s no reference to God whatsoever.
Do we live in a universe without God? What is the purpose of life? Can we only trust what we can see with our eyes and hear with our ears? Is there something more that calls to us from beyond the limits of our understanding? Do we trust facts alone or is there a hybrid kind of knowing that allows faith and reason to co-exist and lead us on to greater truths?
The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture read by Latter-day Saints worldwide, along with the Bible and other modern scripture. People read the Book of Mormon because it answers their questions about the purpose of life. It imparts what they believe to be God-given knowledge about the way the world works, about God’s love for His children, and about their divine destinies. Its central message is that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and that God knows His children and speaks to them today.
You don’t need to be a scholar to read the Book of Mormon. Although after decades of ignoring the book, universities have begun teaching the book as part of the American scriptural canon, and considering its literary value alongside American masterpieces such as Moby Dick and Ben Hur. You don’t even need to be a believer to read it.
The Book of Mormon is unique among books, though, in that it contains answers to some of life’s most pressing questions: Is there a God? Why is religion important? Why should I pray? It’s a book we all should be paying attention to.
Likewise, the Book of Mormon is unique because it invites experimentation. It invites readers to find the evidence of truth for themselves, with only a few prerequisites. All a person needs to discover whether the Book of Mormon contains the truth, or not, is a desire and real intent. All you need is faith.
But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words. Alma 32:27-28
And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. Moroni 10:4-5
